Genuine Alligator Leather – Exotic Leather Luxury

First of all you might already know that leather is basically made out of cow hide. Sometimes it is also made from pig skin, alligator skin and even the skin of snakes. It can be used to make so many things like clothing, baseballs, shoes, belts, bags, and even furniture. First, what is leather. Leather simply stated is the skin of an animal. So as long as the material is made from the skin of an animal, they can claim “Genuine Leather“. Quality leather is a different story. When you finish reading this, you will be able to look at a leather garment and tell immediately if it is quality or not. You might be surprised to know that your baseball mit, your sneakers or even your belt and wrist watch were made from the skin of an animal. When manufacturers make things from leather they know the value of it and make things to sell them for higher prices.

They are of a patchwork design, and usually lined. These are typically made of lambskin leather and being sold for unreal cheap prices. There is nothing wrong with lambskin leather. In fact it is the leather of choice for any leather that is worn close to the skin. The patchwork design is because they swept the scraps off the floor from the manufacture of other garments, fed them through a machine to sew the scraps together, created another sheet of leather and made more garments. Another way you can find out if the leather is real is it’s feel and texture. Most of the time leather is very soft and has an uneven texture to it. If something look at all stiff then it isn’t leather. If it looks like it will tear if you bend it then you know it isn’t real because leather is very flexible. The most vulnerable spots are the driver’s side door, steering wheel, and seat. The console is notorious for dust and dirt. For the best look, you’ll want to keep these areas well maintained and cleaned regularly. Ostrich is naturally oily and will pick up dirt and dust. Keep ostrich interiors well maintained and know that the skin’s qualities will get softer over time, increasing its look and feel. Extreme temperatures or exposure to sunlight will also influence the appearance of exotic skin over time. Certain finishes can react to the sun, fading the color or shine. Less dangerous exotics include eels, stingray, lizard, and ostrich. Exotic leathers used in luxury goods for their beauty and rarity fit into a pecking order for luxury and exclusivity. Experts will tell you the only way to be sure is to look for a ‘genuine alligator’ or ‘genuine crocodile’ label on the product. Price point is another indicator.  Anytime it says ‘embossed croco’ or ‘croco leather’ it’s just embossed cow hide. Only a diamond shaped area on the back of the hide has full quills. The edges of the quill area have smaller quills and is called semi quill. The entire belly is smooth with ‘no quills’. The highest quality bags will be made with ‘full quill’ only.  

Next are the barely luxury and not luxury exotics like stingray, eel, fish and frog. Sting ray has a texture like pebbly glass and is very tough to work with. Eel is lightweight and strong but will demagnetize your credit cards. Frog is downright ugly with irregular warts. The thought of making a bag out of fish skin is well … not something I’d want. Generally, alligator leather is viewed as the nicer and more luxurious leather, with more symmetrical scale patterns and a softer hide. Alligator has a smoother and more “three-dimensional” feel than crocodile skin, and alligator hides typically command the highest prices. Although extremely rare, a very few number of crocodile skins can compare with the quality of alligator hide. These would include “Nile crocodile” and Australian saltwater crocodile. Alligator skins are going to be softer, more supple, more durable, and provide a more uniform scale pattern than crocodile or caiman skins. Additionally, alligator is not an endangered or threatened species, so products manufactured from genuine American alligator are maintaining an environmentally friendly status as well. In the world of luxury handbags there is a pecking order with Crocodile and alligator at the top.
