Double-coat vs. single-coat confusion?
Okay, I’ve always thought that I knew what the difference between a double- and single-coated breed was.
For instance, I have two golden retrievers. They both have a thick undercoat (as well as a top coat), which I have to brush with an undercoat rake to prevent them from shedding all over the place. They are clearly a double-coated breed.
However, I also have two shih tzus. They shed very little, almost none at all. For them I use a comb and a slicker brush. I have always considered them to be a single-coated breed – lacking an undercoat. On the AKC’s website, it describes a shih tzu coat as “luxurious, double-coated, dense, long, and flowing”. It even states that a single-coat is a fault.
Do I just have two coincidentally single-coated shih tzus, or am I mistaken in my definition of double-coated vs. single-coated?
Breeds with an undercoat are considered Doublecoated. Breeds that lack and undercoat are single coated. The amount of sheding has nothing to do with them being single or double coated. Some single coated breeds shed quite a lot and some double coated breeds not all that much.
You are correct your Goldens are double coated, your Shih tzu should also be double coated but if they lack any undercoat at all they would be single coated. Dobermans (my breed) are a single coated breed as they have no undercoat. Maltese are also a single coated breed
