fowl smelling chinese springrolls?
i never eat a chinese takeaway without ordering vegetable spring rolls. i often come across pooey smelling and nasty tasting ones that make me feel physically sick. i took one appart to find the sourse or the smell. Its a strange looking black thing or sometimes a creamy white colour.
any idea’s to what it is? i think it could be old meat but these are supposed to be vegetarian :I what is it????
its definaltly not a mushroom, its more like a strip of something with a fiber type texture. the only way i could describe it is eel skin. the smell diffinatly comes from whatever the ingredient is,not the cabbage im sure.
The black strip is probably – wood ear fungus (mushroom), they are a bit crunchy in texture. They are either bought in strips or large pieces and cut into strips used, in egg rolls, hot and sour soup… It doesn’t really have much of a taste, it’s more for texture. Here’s what it looks like

The smelly part might be Bamboo Shoots. It’s usually smelly if it came from a can because, of it’s brine. It’s the yellow strips. It’s use in spring rolls, stir frys, soups. It’s a bit crunchy but not half as much as the black fungus.
