flying to australia need help with hand luggage requirements?

im flying to oz from the uk soon with quantas and wondered would i be allowed to take a small case as in the smallest you get in luggage sets on as hand luggage its just for my sons stuff??? all help is greatly appreciated as it only tells u sizes on their website and its under the size but cause its a case just not sure???
