Mr Craven is a sad, lonely, man. He has never got over the death of his wife, and he spends a lot of his time travelling abroad to try and forget his unhappiness. He is sad because his young son Colin is an invalid, and he finds it depressing to be with him, so he doesn’t spend much time with him.
Misselthwaite manor is Mr Craven’s home, a big house on the Yorkshire moors, in northern England.
I think Mr Craven is planning to go to Italy on his next trip.
Mr Craven sends for Mary after she has already been at Misslethwaite Manor for a while. He is kind to her, and asks her if there is anything she wants. When she asks him if she can have a bit of the garden for her own, he agrees. He is really quite a nice man, but too absorbed in his personal sadness.
