What purpose would a beam have in a retaining ring, cir-clip, washer or snap ring?

what does beam or break out beam mean in terms of a washer or retaining ring? can anyone explain this in layman’s terms?
On a retaining ring there are normally two lugs. but on some there is what is called a break-out beam on the center most section of the ring. this breakout beam tends to be wider. i believe it has something to do with adding extra strength to the ring, but i’m not sure.
