How do I clean gasoline out of my purse?

While I was filling my little Vespa at the gas station, the nozzle came loose and spilled some gas into the space underneath my seat where I put my purse and stuff I carry and the bottom part of my purse got gas all over it. It’s not exactly soaked, but it’s there and the articles inside (such as cellphone, keys, etc.) did not get any of it, but did get the smell. How can I wash my purse? Can I put it in the washing machine, even though there is a warning on the lid about not putting clothes with gas in them because the fumes are a fire hazard? Can I just wash it real well with soap and water in my sink? Please help!

If it is a plastic or vinyl purse, go ahead with mild soap and water and let the inside dry. If it is a leather purse you will need to use saddle soap. You might try some upholstery cleaner for a fabric purse.
