What’s it mean to be blue-green color blind?
Color blindness is always talked about in terms of reg-green and blue-yellow, but I heard someone say they had blue-green. What does that mean exactly? Is it a combonation of the two, or did I hear incorrectly?
Please include any helpful color blindness sites, especially those that show what color blindness would look like.
Short answer:
It’s either absent S-cones or shifted perception of S-cones. It’s not a combination of red-green and blue-yellow color blindness, it’s actually a better term for blue-yellow color blindness.
Long answer:
Apart from complete color blindness, where you can only see different shades of gray, there are three different types of color blindness to distinguish. Each type relates to one of the three different types of color receptors (cones) in our eyes.
The three types are long, medium and short wavelength sensitive cones (L-, M-, S-cone). If one of them is absent or shifted we talk about color blindness because the perceived color spectrum is smaller compared to normal vision.
Get it down to the colors:
L-cone problems: red-blind or red-weak.
M-cone problems: green-blind or green-weak.
S-cone problems: blue-blind or blue-weak.
Now this names also don’t tell the whole truth because we are mixing a lot of colors. Because red and green cone perception is close to each other, both types are called red-green color blindness.
S-cone problems are often called blue-yellow color blindness. But the term blue-green color blindness would be better. Red-green and blue-green doesn’t mean you have only problems with those colors. But these are the ones among the whole spectrum which are the most obvious for somebody with normal vision.
