Jacket – (Nylon Leather Kevlar) Proper fit. Make sure enough room in jacket for sweatshirt in colder temps. (Belted or laced jackets are good for year round as they can be adjusted for fit) Jackets protect arms, back, chest during accidents. A reflective strip would be an added safety measure.
Helmet – According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration “Unhelmeted motorists are 29 percent less likely to survive a crash and 40 percent more likely to die from a head injury” and “Motorcycle helmets are 67-percent effective in preventing brain injuries. Unhelmeted motorcyclists are more than three times more likely to suffer brain injuries in crashes than those using helmets.” Helmets protect your face and head. Make sure you select a helmet that is DOT and/or Snell rated. They are rated to absorb a rated level of impact during an accident. There are a couple different types of helmets.
Full face helmets cover your entire head and face. The shell wraps around your cheeks, jaw and chin and a clear acrylic visor covers your area of vision. Full face helmets are vented for comfort. This type of helmet offers the most protection. The visor protects your face from bugs, debris, and the elements. One draw back to the full face helmet is some motorcyclist find their peripheral vision is obstructed.
An open face helmet is close to a full helmet, but does not cover the full face. The face is left open, with the shell covering the brow line to the base of the neck. An acrylic shield then covers your face still leaving your chin vunerable to debris and the elements. The open face helmet does not obstruct peripheral vision.
A half-shell or beanie helmet only covers the top half of the head. This helmet offers the least amount of protection. It is suggested you wear goggles or protective eyewear with this style of helmet.
Many helmets come with additional features. Vents are often offered and can help you keep cool while riding. Some helmets offer removable padding for care.
Gloves – Leather and Kevlar. Knuckle protection is good. Waterproof. Insulated or non-insulated. Make sure they are comfortable and not to thick in palm and fingers or you will lose control of shifting. Best gloves have a long cuff that goes up over your sleeve. Watch for seams across the palm as it will cause irritation after hours of riding.
Boots – Leather is best. Low heel to fit peg. Need to support ankle. Approx 6″ tall up to knee for weather protection and warmth. Rubber sole is best for traction and slip resistance. Soles of boots will absorb vibrations.
Chaps – Most riders wear jeans. It is reccommended to wear motorcycle pants made with kevlar to protect your legs during an accident. Most riders do not like the bulk of the pants. Leather, nylon, kevlar. For winter riding the pants can be insulated. If you choose not to wear the pants you can choose chaps. Chaps will offer some protect during an accident. Chaps will cover the front of your legs from road debris.
Enjoy your ride and arrive safely. Protect your head, face, chest, legs and feet safe. No matter what you ride and how safe you ride there is always the chance of an accident. Too many people multi task while driving. For example take notice to the guy next to you talking on the phone or texting and drinking coffee. What about the woman doing her make up, reading, and texting her boyfriend. Ride safe and smart.
