How long will it take for him to get a black belt in Aikido?

My brother is going to be doing Aikido 5 days a week, and sometimes Saturday for a weapons class. He is curious how long it will take Him to get to black belt. He’s not in it just to get the belt, he’s just curious. He’s 2 years younger then me, 15.

How long is a piece of string?

It depends a lot on wether the place he is training is a true dojo, or a Mcdojo.

A lot of McDojos out there are only in it for the buisness, and they will put people through the conveyor belt of gradings, so he could be a black belt in a year or so. But this is not real training, and he will not learn a damn thing.

If it is a real Dojo, then it will take years. He may even stay the same grade for many years before moving on, but that does not matter because he will be understanding each level of his training as he moves up, and will be much much better for it.

The study of MA is not about getting the belt, it is a lifetimes commitment to better yourself and understand your art.
