What is the symbolism of a “yellow bird?

I am a Bright Eyes fan and “yellow bird” comes up in two of his songs, but I’m not exactly sure what it means.

I’ve always wondered that myself, and I’m not completely sure if my hypothesis is correct but here it goes…
There is a song by Simon Joyner called “Along Came a Yellow Bird,” in which the yellow bird symbolizes hope and, essentially, life. If you listen to the “We Are Nowhere and It’s Now” and “Poison Oak,” you may notice that both songs suggest the need and want of security (found in the yellow bird).
I’m not sure if there is any definite connection between Joyner’s late 90s song and Conor’s music, or if it is just understood that a yellow bird symbolizes the virtues of life. However, I think Joyner’s line, “Every time you wish to die an arrow was released, and the only thing between dark and light was my breast or yellow wings,” and Conor’s lyrics, “She says these bars are filled with things that kill and you probably should have learned. Did you forget that yellow bird? How could you forget that yellow bird?” compliment each other very well…
Anyway, I suggest listening to both artists and making your own deduction.
